During the first round of Genius Hour, two 6th grade students wanted to create a newspaper. They wanted to go big! So they got permission from staff, designed a team, determined a meeting location, and led the entire process from start to finish. This was a completely student-led iGrow class based on a student vision.
Fourteen 6th and 7th grade students organized themselves and held regular meetings in the library. They assign jobs, decide on topics, and conduct interviews. Student editors Mila and Ella lead the group and are happy with the first edition of the Quantum Quest, which came out before the Thanksgiving break. The well-rounded piece featured articles, interviews, pictures, a fun story, comics, and games.
These students found an opportunity, got permission, and made a positive impact on their community. Throughout this process they demonstrated leadership skills, integrity, and scholarly behavior.
Our vision is to inspire confident leaders who impact their community through empathy, creativity, and innovation and this is a perfect example of all of our values in action! Congratulations to the entire newspaper team!
